Subsurface States
“This installation emerges from my involvement with the German Soil Orchestra (SOILSCAPE Project) and is currently developed as an independent artistic project.”
The project is currently an independent, artistic and research-based exploration aimed at raising awareness of soil and rethinking the relationship between humans and soil. By engaging directly with bio- and soil-related materials such as mycelium, the project creates a space where scientific perspectives and physical experience converge. The invisible becomes visible and tangible.
About the Installation
In this installation, mycelium is presented as a living material. A terrarium provides a controlled environment in which growth processes and soil dynamics can be observed. Sensor data is collected and stored, and then translated into an underground network of light that reacts to changes. This makes invisible dynamics perceptible.
About the Installation
In a participatory phase, visitors create imprints with mycelium-based materials.

Mycelium: Material, Process, Meaning
In this installation, mycelium serves as both a material and a medium between art and science. It offers a straightforward way to engage with complex soil processes and invites us to consider materiality as an ongoing, living process.
Soil – Mycelium – Human
This installation presents soil, mycelium and humans as part of an interconnected system. Through performative and participatory elements, these relationships are made physically and spatially tangible. Rather than being portrayed as a passive backdrop, the soil is presented as an active, transformative layer.

Why mycelium as a material?
Mycelium combines ecological function with material innovation. As a biodegradable alternative to plastic, it is often derived from organic waste products and can be reintegrated into natural cycles after use.
